“STEALTH” (2014), digital print, 9.5″x17.5″, from the “Learning to Write with Remote Control” series (ongoing) .
Using long exposures and a drone with a single light attached I draw letters at an architectural scale, allowing the wavering movements dictated by uncertain GPS signals and environmental factors to add personality to the forms. As more letters get created they will be used to form words, and perhaps one day the drone will learn to speak in sentences like a wireless Ouija board.

“Signal Culture quarterly meeting and celebration of Dave Jones’ birthday.†(2014) form the Drone Portraiture series. digital print, 20″x24″

“Constellations of the City” (2014), digital print, 60″x40″
For the “Heart of the City†show at 516 Arts in Albuquerque I worked with students from my International Collaborative Art program at UNM to develop a drawing based on the discovery of transitional points (unoccupied or under construction spaces at the time) on a map of downtown Albuquerque. A form emerged by drawing lines between these locations, and the resulting form became the flight path for an LED equipped drone.

“A Drone Struggles to Draw Against a Snowstorm: Philadelphia” (2014), digital print, 20″x24″
As a visiting artist at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, I worked with students to create an image similar to the one created in “Constellations of the City”. The weather conspired against us, and the flight was unsuccessful. however the drone’s struggle to follow it’s appointed route was evocatively documented in this image.

“Sprawl” (2012), 9:00 video
A weather balloon carrying a low power television transmitter is launched above the Barelas neighborhood of Albuquerque, NM. The intent is for the transmitter to be carried high enough into the sky that it’s signal will eventually not be received by a television on the ground tuned to channel 11. This piece prefigures my interest in ideas of mapping relative to drone flight.

“Evading the Stupidity Tax” from “In a Time of Inequality” (2014), computer algorithm, digital prints available at various sizes.
I use evolving data visualizations to select lottery numbers based on the historical database of winning numbers in the Powerball lottery.
This is a part of a series of works my wife and I are working on called “In a Time of Inequality” where we document our attempts to succeed financially in a world with a growing wealth gap.

“I am Sitting in a Theater” (2011) , 2:30:00 video
The very first instance of “Transformers Transformed”
Using the methodology of Alvin Lucier’s “I am sitting in a room” video was recorded off the television screen, and then re-recorded until the original sound and image were completely abstracted from the original.

Barcode Cinema with Kristin Lucas, presented at Conflux festival, NY in 2010 Using smartphones and a map provided to festival attendees, visitors could scan QR codes placed around the city to experience an augmented reality. QR codes led to sonifications of photographs of the area where the QR code was found, that were scavenged from public file sharing sites.

“Copyright Symphony”, 2009, computer algorithm, used in performance
“Copyright Symphony” uses an Processing application named ImageFreq, which began as an experiment with fair use principles in the form of a symphony. Pixels in each image generate sounds (midi, or sine wave) based on the numerical values of each pixel’s red, green, and blue channels
