Using long exposures and a drone with a single light attached I draw letters at an architectural scale, allowing the wavering movements dictated by uncertain GPS signals and environmental factors to add personality to the forms. As more letters get created they will be used to form words, and perhaps one day the drone will learn to speak in sentences like a wireless Ouija board.

These images are evidence of artists and individuals photographed in relation to spaces they inhabit, wish to inhabit, or have in some way developed a significant relationship with.

For the “Heart of the City” show at 516 Arts in Albuquerque I worked with students from my International Collaborative Art program at UNM to develop a drawing based on the discovery of transitional points (unoccupied or under construction spaces at the time) on a map of downtown Albuquerque. A form emerged by drawing lines between these locations, and the resulting form became the flight path for an LED equipped drone.

As a visiting artist at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, I worked with students to create an image similar to the one created in “Constellations of the City”. The weather conspired against us, and the flight was unsuccessful. however the drone’s struggle to follow it’s appointed route was evocatively documented in this image.

A weather balloon carrying a low power television transmitter is launched above the Barelas neighborhood of Albuquerque, NM. The intent is for the transmitter to be carried high enough into the sky that it’s signal will eventually not be received by a television on the ground tuned to channel 11. This piece prefigures my interest in ideas of mapping relative to drone flight.
